So today we made page 10 of The Scottish Sunday Times. Its great to get our name out in the public and let people know about the project. We’re looking forward to people getting in touch who would like to help out with mypolice.
I was slightly unhappy with the title of the article, “Warning over ‘Shop a cop’ website” The only people to have seen the design for the website and listened to our presentation is those who were present at last weeks Social Innovation Camp. We did spend a long time going over what people might think about the website and what elements of it may worry people about misuse. In response to this we are looking at ways of moderating the site and designing it so that the mypolice service is breeding positive outcomes and will not be misused.
With regards to the comments made by Calum Steele,
“The police service already have ways for the public to express dissatisfaction…”
Through our research we have found that this feedback option is not felt to be adequate by the public. In one case we were told,
“I complained about the police service. They sent an officer round to take down the complaint. I felt pressurized and that the officer taking the details was biased towards the police force and watering down the complaint. The written page that was taken away didn’t encapsulate what I wanted to get across, it was a complete waste of time. I was later sent a letter that brushed me off, had many of the facts wrong and left me feeling undermined.”
We would like to make the link between the public and the police force better. By offering feedback, and tagging the information geographically, we feel that we can offer the police service an opportunity to find out what the public want and need in their local area.
I look forward to meetings with the Police and also to to meet Calum Steele so that I can personally take him through what we are proposing and reiterate that mypolice.org is not about ’shopping’ police officers. It is important in our process to co-design the site with the police in order for it to work with them, not against.
If you have any comments please leave them or if you would like to be involved in the project send an email to hello@mypolice.org
